How to Find Your Freelancing Niche. (2)

HOW TO FIND YOUR FREELANCING NICHE.[PART 2]

Who do you think makes more money: a general dentist or an endodontist? Both have the education and skills to perform root canals, though one is presented as a specialist. According to the American Association of Endodontists, “The average endodontist completes 25 root canal treatments a week, while general dentists do about two root canals a week.”
The same goes for freelancing. Specializing in something makes you a hot commodity. The rarer you are, the more in-demand you’ll be.
While some people find success in being a generalist, most writers, bloggers and freelancers generally, will need to focus and narrow down a topic of expertise. You guessed it: a niche!
Note: “If you’ve already found your niche, leave a comment at the end of this post, and tell us what it is and how you found it”
Likely you’ve heard of finding a niche or “niching down,” but what does that even mean? It means to choose a narrow topic or audience to focus your content. The reason for doing this is to allow you to create the most valuable content for a specific audience. That way, your readers will love what you wrote and feel like you wrote it just for them. That is what builds a loyal readership or client base.
While many people say that your niche must intersect with an industry or a market that is highly profitable, I think that you should find a profitable niche based on your interests, experience and abilities. Based on this I have outlined a few tips (some of which are personal questions), to help you in finding your niche;
what is your expertise or background?
o    Coursework that you've completed
o    Any degrees or certificates you've earned
o    Professional work experience
Ø     What are your passions or interests?
o    Hobbies and activities
o    Ways you spend your free time
o    Things you like to talk about with your friends

Ø       Who do you want to help?
o    Any volunteer experiences you have enjoyed
o    Social causes that are personally meaningful to you
o    Nonprofits that you contribute to or follow.
There may be more subconscious interests that you didn’t even consider!
o    Pinterest board content and topics
o    Types of people, companies, and organizations you follow on Twitter and Instagram
o    Topics of any blogs you follow
Put these lists next to each other. Do you see any themes emerging? Highlight list items that seem relevant to one another (or colour code them) and connect some dots. Your college minor in fine art may seem useless until you pair it with your passion for the local art scene and realize how much content marketing help small art studios and galleries need. Boom, you found your niche!
Haven’t found your niche yet? Here are a few other ways which you can use to find it.
ü    Sculpt Your Niche from Your Passion
What do you read? When you’re running in the morning, ruminating on your commute, or in the shower, what topics is your mind regularly drawn to? These are all clues that can point you toward a future niche. If you’re faced with too many options, the idea of making a decision can feel overwhelming. Grant yourself the freedom to purge, on paper, any possible idea you could ever dream up. Your list may consist of blog topics, statistics, or quotes that interest you, or strategies you’d love to suggest to a business. Everyone’s list will be different, so don’t put any pressure on yourself to perfect the ideation process.
Another tip is to make note of the kinds of writing projects you enjoy. Of all the assignments you’ve written recently, which did you find yourself most engaged with? That right there is a great place to narrow your focus.
Elizabeth Wellington, a freelance writer, editor, and content strategist, has this to say: “I started as a generalist and narrowed my niche by noticing what I loved to write about. As I wrote about different topics, I kept track of the articles I enjoyed the most and which ones gained the most traction with audiences. I looked at that cross-section and noticed that they all spoke to an audience of Millennials about how to create a life and career that they loved. I started specializing in topics underneath that umbrella.”
ü    Understanding Your Business
To find your niche, you have to get serious. You have to upgrade from hobby to business and define it.
You can lay the foundation for the future of your business through these exercises:
  • Defining your success; For some, its 5 cars; for others, 50 employees. By setting business goals, you develop ideas about what you want your business to become and lay a road map for how to get there. Think big, and think long-term.
  • Characterizing your audience; If you don’t know which clients you’re primarily targeting, you can’t tailor your business to that market. Use your expertise and passions to help characterize your audience.
  • Naming your business; It’s not just “I need a name,” it’s defining how you want your audience to perceive your business.
  • Developing your business identity; Business name in hand, you’ve got to brand your business keeping in mind your target audience.
Ps; if you’ve found your niche do well to tell us what niche it is and how you found it in the comment box below.

How To Find Your Frelancing Niche

HOW TO FIND YOUR FREELANCING NICHE [PART 1]

A few days ago I wrote a post on “how to start freelancing” now this is a follow up on that post.

“Today you will read about the different types of freelancing – In this post you will discover the secrets to finding your freelancing niche”

Note: “If you’ve already found your niche, leave a comment at the end of this post, and tell us what it is and how you found it”

You’ve all heard the phrase, “if you try to be good at everything, you’ll be excellent at nothing.” – April Greer.

So therefore the need for specialising in a particular area and Finding your niche.

Before talking about “the secrets to finding your freelancing niche”, I would like to lay a prior foundation for you on the different types of freelancing.

So, let’s get started.

TYPES OF FREELANCING

In the previous post, I listed a number of freelancing types which someone could venture into and make money from. Today I will be explaining further on the various types of freelancing and also include some that were not included in the previous post.

  • Travel Writer - you don’t necessarily need to have training in this area just passion and a way with words! I have come across some amazing opportunities to get your writing out there. One great website is HARO (Help A Reporter Out), you can register here and they send you stories that reporters are after - if one suits you and your skill set you send in your proposal - how knows you may end up in the New York Times (it has happened!).

  • English Teacher - one of the best qualifications you can get if you want to work overseas is your TESOL or TEFL Certification. You can get this prior to your arrival, there are some great online courses like i-to-i's OnlineTEFL course or some countries will have places where you can do your qualifications in country.

  • Graphic Designer - providing you have clients and your equipment you can take your graphic design business on the road on a freelance basis!

  • Blogger - you can blog about "ANYTHING" - it doesn’t have to be a travel blog - everyday people are making a living through their blogs. I just did a search of blogs and found one dedicated to hung-over owls - photos of owls looking hung-over - surely there is a niche out there with your name on it!!! Before you get started I would HIGHLY recommend checking out "Derek Halpern’s website Social Triggers".

  • Photographer - got a camera, got a Smartphone? Why not try your hand at freelance photography!!! I have found some amazing websites where you can sell your pictures. My favourite is Society 6 where the process is so simple - you upload your image, put what mark up or profit you would like customers browse, put in an order, Society 6 prints it, mounts it or turns it into an iPhone cover, cushion or t-shirt and then posts it for you! Easy...

  • Elance worker - if you haven’t checked out Elance, you definitely should. They claim to be the number one site for freelance workers. Categories range from IT, design, writing, sales through to admin support and everything in between!

  • Musician - OK so you will probably need to have some skills to follow this path but if you are already a musician there is no reason why you couldn’t take your talents on the road!

  • Author - everyone has a story to tell, an interest or passion. If you are a freelancer, you can write about how you made your first pay, the steps you took and the problems you encountered. Whatever it is that you know and it’s useful, write about it! Where does your mind go when you day dream? This is a good place to start.

  • Interpreter - again you will have to have a pretty specific skill set but if you are bi-lingual you could use those skills not only in foreign countries but also in your home country! There are also a lot of jobs calling for interpreters on Elance so you could use your skills and work from anywhere!

  • Film Maker - if you have a camera, Smartphone, gopro etc you can become a film maker! It is easy to create your own Youtube channel and upload your videos - believe me if I can do it anyone can!!!

  • YouTube sensation - you don’t necessarily have to be a film maker in the making to be a You Tube sensation. As I am sure we all know there are some crazy clips of random things that have millions of hits. Usually just a case of being in the right place at the right time, so always have you camera or phone at the ready!

  • Etsy Shop Owner - check out Etsy - an amazing online store where up and coming designers and craftspeople sell their wares. Another option here is to source amazing things from your travels and sell them through your Etsy store if you aren’t all that creative!

OTHER TYPES OF FREELANCING

Other types of freelancing include:

  • NGO worker
  • Volunteer
  • Virtual Assistant
  • Tour guide
  • Busker
  • Yoga Instructor
  • Face painter

Now that you are fully grounded on the various types of freelancing, how about you tell us how this post has helped you in your freelancing career in the comment box below.

A freelancer or freelance worker is a term commonly used for a person who is self-employed and is not necessarily committed to a particular employer long-term.

MAKE MONEY ONLINE AS A FREELANCER USING SOCIAL MEDIA

HOW TO MAKE MONEY ONLINE AS A FREELANCER USING SOCIAL MEDIA
One of the best ways to market your freelancing services, is through the social media. Below are some directions on how to go about it.

Blogging
One of the most popular and efficient ways of making money online as a freelancer is through blogs-“by guest posting on big blogs”.
Guest posting on big blogs: This is the mother of all social-media promotion strategies. You want to appear on the most prominent, highly trafficked blogs you can. This puts you in front of millions of viewers and can get you exposure across many social-media platforms...which greatly ups your odds that a prospect might notice you.
If you follow the guidelines, you'd be surprised at the popular blogs you could guest for, even if your own blog is brand new. Any site that posts its guidelines is wide open.
LinkedIn
LinkedIn is like no other social-media channel in that it is focused on business, rather than chatting about what happened on The Walking Dead this week or whatever. You can do more proactive marketing of your freelance business here, without pissing people off, than on any other platform.
Twitter
Well, you must be thinking, "It's only 140 characters! How can I possibly write something reasonable here?"
While it's hard to make an elaborate write-up on Twitter, you can discover and get to know editors and marketing managers on here through keyword searches, following relevant industry hashtags, and by starting to build relationships. (If you're looking for editors or journalists you might know who could refer you, try MuckRack.) If something develops, you can always take it further on email or the phone later to land the actual gig.
Facebook
Facebook is extremely social and tough to do business on if you're not a major corporation with a big ad budget...but there are a couple of useful ways to find clients through this platform:
1. Do prospect research: If you have a particular type of business you frequently target as a client, you can use Facebook to search for businesses of that type. Check out their Facebook presence and see if it's looking pro. From there, take a look at their website. Spotting substandard online marketing gives you an easy angle for pitching companies that they need your services.
2. Have your own business page. Most freelancers don't have a Facebook business page -- which means you can stand out by being the only freelancer in town that has one. (For extra marketing boost, offer some authority-building free product full of links to your website to visitors who 'like' your page.)
For instance, I did a quick search for "Freelance graphic designer" on Facebook recently, and discovered the most popular site -- the top result -- has only 3,500 fans. Four of the top sites are based in Third World countries.
Put up a page in this niche and it's going to be pretty easy to start ranking well and getting found on searches inside Facebook. And if you're a freelancer who'd like to manage social media or create Facebook pages for clients, creating your own page is mandatory.
YouTube
YouTube is a great place to put up a visual portfolio or some short how-to videos that might help your prospects.
Build authority with videos: This one's tough for writers, but if you're a visual artist of any kind, YouTube is a great place to put up a visual portfolio or some short how-to videos that might help your prospects. Offer a few business writing or newsletter design tips, with an offer of help if they need it.
Remember, this is the third most-popular site on the Internet. It can pay to have a presence here.
